I love apples. When I’m rich, all of my apples will be Honeycrisp apples. No more will I be forced to slum it with a bag full of Gala or Fuji apples. I’ll be living the good life.
But I digress.
Before I eat an apple, I rinse it. I don’t scrub it. I don’t clean it. All I do is run water over it. Why? I don’t really know. Germs? Pesticides? Cooties? A whole slew of scary things that I don’t really understand, but everyone else says to wash your produce so I wash it.
But just putting something under running water does not seem like it’s actually doing anything. That’s rinsing. That’s not washing.
But according to this, just rinsing your produce is fine except…
- If it’s leafy (like lettuce) – let it soak in a bowl then rinse again
- If it’s hard (like melons, cucumbers) – use a scrub brush under running water
- If it’s in a bunch (like grapes) – rinse using a strainer
And besides these threats, don’t forget to be mindful of the cleanliness of your hands and the areas you’re working in because cross-contamination can lead to all types of food-borne illness.
